Programs

Planned Parenthood Affiliates of Michigan is a 501c3 nonprofit that works to protect and enhance the ability of affiliates to deliver comprehensive reproductive health services by educating supporters and the public about the impact of public policy on the lives of Michiganders, especially as it relates to access to reproductive Justice issues.

In achieving our goals, we conduct comprehensive, targeted, strategic, and layered organizing and issue education campaigns. We leverage our existing volunteer activist and supporter base to contact, identify, educate, and mobilize voters in our targeted areas. This base includes teens, college students, young professionals, health center patients, affiliate board members, staff, donors, volunteers, and community stakeholders.

Issue Education

This includes conversations with legislators and administration officials about the business side of the work that Planned Parenthood does, not specific to legislative action. In addition, staff runs programs to educate and build support with specific constituencies such as the Health Center Advocacy Program (HCAP), campus organizing, teens and peer educators and other areas of youth leadership development.

Civic Engagement

Separate from other electoral work, these activities encourage voters from underrepresented communities to participate in elections. Planned Parenthood is a trusted messenger and an impactful organization with these efforts. We build organizational capacity to increase civic participation in order to help improve the quality of life for all Michiganders by educating target constituencies about the importance of civic participation and by broadening the base of people willing and prepared to help advance the quality of life of all Michiganders through civic participation, particularly women between the ages of 18-45, low-income women, and women of color. Our activities provide meaningful opportunities to engage our constituencies year-round on an ongoing basis.

Reproductive Justice/Racial Justice/Economic Justice lens work and initiatives

We will begin to build relationships with partner organizations and individual activists working in racial and economic justice movements in order to build a better understating about the intersectionality of our work. We will seek to explore areas of common concern and find ways to work more closely together. We will continue upon our work in the City of Detroit to further engage African American and Latino supporters in our advocacy initiatives through our involvement with the Detroit Voices table, and an increased focus on engaging directly with African American and Latino patients and supporters in the City and surrounding areas.

Planned Parenthood Generation Action

We will continue to work closely with student groups on campuses at 9 different colleges and universities. These groups will implement our statewide campaigns on their campuses and we will provide students with deep and meaningful skills building and leadership development opportunities.
Group memberships in campus based groups will total more than 150 consistently. We will continue to encourage graduating Teen Peer Educators who go on to college to become active in their campus’ groups.

Coalition Work

We work in collaboration with our statewide coalition table under the direction of Michigan Voice. This coalition allows us to work closely with other service providers and organizations from labor, education, health care, civil rights, LGBT rights, and environmental justice communities on a cohesive progressive issue agenda and civic engagement initiatives. Additionally, we maintain a strong coalition of women’s groups in the state including Michigan NOW, the Michigan Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice, and the Michigan ACLU to advance our specific issue agenda and voter engagement initiatives.
